What Does The Bible Say About Hope?
Hope has a widespread opinion of what it is. The world displays hopes to us as a desire, a dream, or a wish, but God has much larger intention for hope. Hope is more than anticipation of things we desire, it is a display of our faithfulness. With true hope from God, we open a door to endless possibilities.
Hope is Revolutionary
Matthew 19:26 – But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Proverbs 23:18 – There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.
Proverbs 26:12 – Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
God wants our hopes to revolutionize our lives. Without hope, we cannot endure our deepest pains and struggles. Without hope, we cannot survive. With hope, our lives are transformed to be able to endure what we are walking through and realize what is truly important. God gives us hope through His promises to us.
Hope is Not Wishful, it is an Act of Faith
Hebrews 11:1 – Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Romans 12:12 – Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
Proverbs 3:5 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
Psalm 39:7 – And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you.
Mark 9:23 – And Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
God tells us in these verses that our hope is not a wishful thought, but an actual action of faith. When we confidently expect the things that God has promised us, we have found the action of hope that He is intending for us.
Hope Brings Us Strength and Security
2 Timothy 1:7 – For God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power and love and self-control.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 – So we do not lose heart. Though our other self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
Romans 15:13 – May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
Deuteronomy 31:6 – Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.
Job 11:18 – You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety.
Isaiah 40:31 – But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
God created us in His image. He reminds us that we are created with a spirit to hold hope. Holding our revolutionary hope gives us the strength and power that God possesses, because He is within us. We can rest in the confidence for strength when we have our hope. Hope eliminates our fears. Hope eliminates a grim fate. Hope is our power to live as a child of God.
We Have Hope for Eternal Life
Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Revelation 21:4 – And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.
1 Peter 1:3 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Matthew 25:21 – His Lord said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.”
1 Corinthians 2:9 – Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.
Titus 3:7 – So that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
When we truly understand and begin to live out hope, God promises us of our eternal life. He reminds us that our lives are living out according to His ultimate plan, and that our circumstances are to provide us with an everlasting future. Our hope eliminates death, for we shall live.
Our Hopes Praise God
Proverbs 24:14 – Know that wisdom is such to your soul; if you find it, there will be a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
Romans 8:24-25 – For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
Psalm 71:14 – As for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more.
Acting out our hope in our daily life glorifies God. He gave us an ultimate salvation, and we are to live out our gift. Even in our most hurtful moments, our hope in God brings him praise. We acknowledge His control for our lives, and know that His plan for us is good.
