Bible Verses About Family

What Does The Bible Say About Family?

Mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, the list is nearly endless. Some of us even find our family within our friendships. Our closest bonds are with those we call family, which can often lead us to our greatest heartache. We tend to hurt and be hurt by the ones we love the most. Our entire selves, a bulk of our identity, comes from our family. God gives us many examples of what a Godly family should be.

Remembering Where We Came From

Exodus 20:12 – Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Proverbs 6:20 – My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

Proverbs 15:20 – A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother.

Colossians 3:20 – Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

2 Corinthians 6:18 – And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.

Genesis 1:28 – And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

Ephesians 3:14-15 – For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named…

Remembering where we came from is an important part of our family. Beyond our parents giving us life, we were a gift directly from God to the earth. We were named by Him and are His children. When it comes to family, we came from God and were given to our parents, who He commands us to honor.

We Make Our Own Family When We Marry

Genesis 2:24 – Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Psalm 128:3-4 – Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house, your children will be like olive shoots around your table. Yes, this will be the blessing for the man who fears the Lord.

Proverbs 12:4 – A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.

1 Timothy 5:8 – But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Marriage binds to create a new family. Building a new family according to His word is God’s desire for us. God tells us that by doing this is a great blessing. However, He warns us that if we do build a family in a manner that is not according to His word, He views that as a denial of our faith.

We Are All God’s Children, So We Are All Family

Ephesians 1:5 – God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

Romans 12:5 – So we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

Galatians 3:28 – There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 6:10 – Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Ephesians 3:15 – From whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.

God’s value for family is so high, He is constantly referring to us all as His children. He reminds us that not only do we belong to Him, but we also belong to each other. His desire is for us to see everyone as God’s people that are worthy of the same love and grace He casts on us.

We Must Show Love to Our Family

1 John 4:19 – We love because he first loved us.

Romans 8:28 – And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

1 Corinthians 1:10 – I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.

1 John 4:20 – Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.

Proverbs 17:17 – A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.

While the ones we love the most are often the ones that frustrate and anger us the most, God makes it clear to us that we are to love our families. He desires for us to remain united, so much that He tells us that loving our family is the only way we can truly love Him. Our families are intended to support us during our most difficult times, so we must continue to love and contribute to the bonded unit.

Our Faith Begins Within the Home

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 – These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Acts 16:31 – They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved-you and your household.”

Acts 10:2 – He and his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.

God emphasizes the importance of family because that’s where our faith begins. We learn about Christ and the teachings He commands from a godly family. His intention for our families is for us to continue to bring children to Him, so that they too will grow in faith and build their own Godly family.
