Bible Verses About Death

What Does The Bible Say About Death?

Death is a central theme in the bible, repeatedly appearing throughout scripture as both an inevitability and a metaphor for change and growth.

In many cases, death symbolizes the darkness and evil that surrounds us in the world, while also offering a glimpse of hope by reminding us that life will always eventually triumph over death.

The Bible is full of powerful stories about those who faced their own mortality with courage, from Abraham choosing to sacrifice his son Isaac to Job’s perseverance despite all odds.

Ultimately, these stories remind us of our own mortality and the need to live each day fully, passionately, and with gratitude for the gift of life.

Death Quotes

Death in the Bible

God does not promise us a life without death, pain and sorrow. Part of human life on earth involves death, and with death, comes grieving. This time of sorrow is sacred, for grieving death is unique to every individual. God acknowledges our time and need to grieve by telling us that they have a place in our lives. Acknowledging our grief is full of importance.

Ecclesiatstes 3:4

A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.

Psalm 119:28

Ecclesiastes 12:7 Bible Verse

Our Feelings of Sorrow Will Not Be Forever

God acknowledges our time to grieve without putting a time limit for the process, but lets us know that we will not have feelings of mourning forever. Days of sorrow will be followed with days of joy and healing. God also tells us that no matter how great our grief may be, the reward we reap from God will far surpass anything we can imagine. Healing will come, and the glory that we long for will be revealed in His timing. Hold strong, continue to keep one foot in front of the other. These days of grief are temporary.

Psalm 30:5

For his anger lasts only a moment, but His favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

God Provides Solace In Our Grief

God reminds us that He is with us during the time of death. He promises to provide us with comfort and rest, for grieving takes a toll on our physical body as well. He promises us that believing in Him gives us the ability to not fear death and sorrow, for we know that glory is not far behind.

John 14:1-4

Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, there where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.

Death is Not Final

As a follower of Christ, death is not our conclusion. We are reassured that living this life for Christ is to live with Him in heaven, without pain and sorrow. A believer that passes away in this life is gaining their glory and reward that is promised to us. The only way to join Christ in Heaven is to continue to follow Him. When we lose our loved ones, or hear a devastating diagnosis, we can find comfort in the promise of a new life with Him. While God understands that sorrow comes with death, He also does not want us to fear death by giving us this promise.

Luke 23:43

And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with my in Paradise.”

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Death Has Been Defeated

God goes beyond telling us that death is not our last step by letting us know it has been completely defeated. There will come a time that death will not happen, and His people will return with Him in heaven to escape death once and for all. We will no longer be separated with those that we have grieved in death. The last thing to be rid of this world will be death, and Jesus has conquered that for us by His sacrifice on the cross.

But now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

1 Corinthians 15:55

O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?

We Need to Offer Comfort To Those In Grief

Grief is all consuming, and a difficult road to walk without support. We often see meal trains, sympathy cards, phone calls, and visits to those in mourning as a way to show our support. These gestures are a direct motion from God, as he tells us that we need to support one another. At some point, we will all endure death and grief, bonding us through pain. We support those in mourning, as we will also need the same support during our own bereavements.

Ecclesiastes 7:2

It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart.
