The Ten Plagues of Egypt
The Ten Plagues of Egypt
Exodus 7–12 recounts a series of plagues on Egypt as Pharaoh repeatedly refuses to release the Israelites, culminating in the death of the firstborn and the Passover.
The Ten Plagues of Egypt
Moses and Aaron repeatedly stand before Pharaoh with a demand: Israel must be allowed to go and worship the LORD. Pharaoh refuses, and Exodus describes a sequence of signs and plagues that steadily dismantle Egypt’s security.
The Nile turns to blood. Frogs spread through the land, followed by gnats or lice and then swarms of insects. Livestock are struck, painful boils afflict people and animals, hail devastates crops, locusts consume what remains, and darkness covers Egypt.
Throughout the sequence, Pharaoh’s responses shift between resistance, temporary concession, and renewed refusal. Exodus speaks both of Pharaoh hardening his own heart and of God hardening it. The narrative uses the repeated confrontations to display a conflict of authority: Pharaoh claims control over an enslaved people, while the LORD declares Israel his own.
The final plague is set apart from the others. Israelite households are instructed to prepare the Passover meal and mark their doors with blood. During the night the firstborn in Egypt die. Pharaoh finally summons Moses and Aaron and tells Israel to leave.
The plagues are therefore not isolated miracles. They form a sustained judgment-and-deliverance narrative that culminates in Passover and leads directly into the departure from Egypt. Later biblical texts repeatedly remember the Exodus as a defining act of deliverance.
