The Ten Commandments
The Ten Commandments
At Mount Sinai, God establishes covenant with Israel and gives the commandments that stand at the center of the Sinai law.
The Ten Commandments
After leaving Egypt, Israel comes to Mount Sinai. The people have experienced deliverance, but Exodus now turns to covenant: what kind of people will they be, and what will life with the God who rescued them require?
God tells Moses to remind Israel what has already happened: they have been brought out of Egypt and carried to this place. Israel is then called to covenant faithfulness and described in terms of treasured possession, priestly kingdom, and holy nation.
The mountain is prepared with boundaries, and the scene becomes overwhelming with thunder, lightning, cloud, trumpet sound, smoke, and trembling. The commandments begin with God’s identity as the one who brought Israel out of slavery.
The commands address loyalty to God, idolatry, misuse of the divine name, Sabbath, parents, murder, adultery, theft, false testimony, and coveting. They are not presented as a method for escaping Egypt; they are given to a people who have already been delivered.
The commandments become central to Israel’s covenant life and are repeated in Deuteronomy 5 for a new generation. Jesus and later New Testament writers also return to these commands when discussing love of God, love of neighbor, and the moral shape of faithful life.
