Moses and the Burning Bush
Moses and the Burning Bush
At Horeb, God appears to Moses from a bush that burns without being consumed, calls him to lead Israel from Egypt, and reveals the divine name.
Moses and the Burning Bush
Moses has moved far from the Egyptian court and from the crisis that drove him out of Egypt. He is tending the flock of his father-in-law in Midian when he comes to Horeb, called the mountain of God. There he sees a bush burning without being consumed.
When Moses turns aside to investigate, God calls his name from the bush. Moses is told not to come closer and to remove his sandals because the ground is holy. God identifies himself with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, connecting this new calling with the promises of Genesis.
God says that Israel’s suffering in Egypt has been seen and heard. The purpose of the encounter is therefore not merely revelation to Moses; Moses is being sent back into the place he fled. He is to confront Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out.
Moses responds with objections. He questions his own adequacy, asks what name he should give Israel, worries that the people will not believe him, and points to his difficulty speaking. God answers each objection with promises, signs, and instruction. Aaron is appointed to assist him.
The encounter transforms Moses’ direction without pretending that he is naturally confident. The reluctant shepherd leaves the mountain with a commission grounded not in his own status but in God’s presence. Exodus 3–4 becomes the doorway to the confrontation with Pharaoh, the plagues, Passover, and the Exodus itself.
