The Temptation of Jesus
The Temptation of Jesus
After his baptism, Jesus is led into the wilderness and tested by the devil. He answers each temptation with Scripture and refuses to abandon obedience to God.
The Temptation of Jesus
After his baptism, Jesus is led into the wilderness. He fasts for forty days, and the tempter approaches him at a point of physical hunger.
The temptations challenge Jesus to use power for himself, to force a dramatic demonstration of divine protection, and to gain rule through worship of the devil. Matthew and Luke arrange the latter temptations differently, but both portray a sustained test of Jesus’ identity and obedience.
Jesus answers with Scripture drawn from Deuteronomy, the book that reflects on Israel’s wilderness experience. Bread is not the whole basis of life; God must not be put to the test; worship belongs to God alone.
The parallels with Israel are significant. Israel was called God’s son, passed through water, entered the wilderness, and was tested. Jesus’ baptism is followed by wilderness testing, but the narrative presents him as remaining faithful.
When the testing ends, the devil departs, and the Gospel story moves into Jesus’ public ministry. The scene establishes from the beginning that the path of the Son will not be defined by self-serving power, spectacle, or compromised worship.
