The Baptism of Jesus
The Baptism of Jesus
Jesus comes to John for baptism. The heavens open, the Spirit descends, and a voice from heaven identifies Jesus as the beloved Son.
The Baptism of Jesus
Before Jesus begins his public ministry, John the Baptist is preaching repentance and baptizing people in the Jordan. Crowds come to him, and John’s message prepares for someone greater who is coming after him.
Jesus comes to be baptized. Matthew preserves John’s hesitation, since John believes he should be baptized by Jesus instead. Jesus insists that the baptism should proceed.
As Jesus comes up from the water, the Gospel accounts describe the heavens opening and the Spirit descending upon him in bodily form like a dove. A voice from heaven identifies Jesus as the beloved Son and expresses divine pleasure.
The scene brings together Jesus, the Spirit, and the heavenly voice at the beginning of the ministry. It also connects Jesus with John’s renewal movement while distinguishing him from John.
Immediately afterward, the Synoptic Gospels move Jesus into the wilderness for testing. The baptism is therefore not an isolated ceremonial moment. It marks a transition from hidden years to public mission and establishes themes of sonship, Spirit, obedience, and divine approval that shape what follows.
