The Sermon on the Mount
The Sermon on the Mount
Matthew 5–7 gathers major teachings of Jesus on the kingdom, righteousness, prayer, love of enemies, judgment, trust in God, and putting his words into practice.
The Sermon on the Mount
Matthew gathers a large body of Jesus’ teaching into the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus goes up a mountain, sits down, and teaches his disciples with the crowds also present.
The sermon opens with the Beatitudes, pronouncing blessing on people the world may not naturally call fortunate: the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, peacemakers, and those persecuted for righteousness.
Jesus calls his followers salt of the earth and light of the world. He then addresses the Law and Prophets, insisting that his mission is not simple abolition. A series of teachings moves from external acts toward the intentions and desires beneath them, addressing anger, lust, divorce, oaths, retaliation, and love for enemies.
Matthew 6 turns to religious practice. Giving, prayer, and fasting are not to become performances for human applause. The Lord’s Prayer provides a model centered on God’s name, kingdom, daily provision, forgiveness, and deliverance. Jesus also teaches about treasure, money, anxiety, and trust in the Father’s care.
Matthew 7 addresses judgment, prayer, the narrow way, false prophets, and genuine discipleship. The sermon ends with the image of two builders. Hearing Jesus’ words is not enough; wisdom means acting on them.
The Sermon on the Mount is not a single story in the same sense as David and Goliath, but it is a major Gospel event and one of the most concentrated presentations of Jesus’ teaching. Reading it as a whole reveals a vision of life shaped by God’s kingdom from the inside out.
