Samuel Anoints David

BIBLE STORY

Samuel Anoints David

1 Samuel 16 tells how Samuel goes to Bethlehem to anoint one of Jesse’s sons and learns that God’s choice is the youngest son, David.

THE STORY

Samuel Anoints David

God tells Samuel to stop mourning over Saul and sends him to Bethlehem with oil. One of Jesse’s sons has been chosen as the future king.

Samuel fears Saul’s reaction, so his visit is framed around a sacrifice. Jesse and his sons are invited.

When Samuel sees Eliab, the oldest son, his appearance seems kingly. But God tells Samuel not to judge by height or outward appearance.

One son after another passes before Samuel, and none is chosen.

Samuel asks Jesse whether these are all his sons. Jesse explains that the youngest remains with the sheep.

David is summoned from the fields. God tells Samuel to rise and anoint him.

Samuel pours oil on David in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD comes powerfully upon David from that day forward.

David does not immediately take the throne. Saul remains king, and years of service, conflict, flight, and waiting lie ahead. The anointing therefore begins a calling whose public fulfillment will be delayed.
