Saul Is Anointed King
Saul Is Anointed King
1 Samuel 9–10 tells how Saul searches for lost donkeys, meets the prophet Samuel, and is privately anointed before later being publicly identified as Israel’s first king.
Saul Is Anointed King
Saul enters the story looking for his father’s missing donkeys. He and a servant search through several regions without success and eventually decide to consult a respected man of God.
The prophet is Samuel. Before Saul arrives, God has already told Samuel that a man from Benjamin will come and that Samuel is to anoint him as leader over Israel.
Samuel welcomes Saul, seats him in a place of honor at a meal, and assures him that the lost donkeys have already been found.
The next morning Samuel takes a flask of oil, pours it on Saul’s head, kisses him, and tells him that the LORD has anointed him over his inheritance.
Samuel gives Saul several signs that will confirm the calling. As Saul leaves, the signs occur, and he joins a group of prophets as the Spirit of God comes powerfully upon him.
Later Samuel gathers Israel at Mizpah. Through the public selection process, Saul is identified, but he is nowhere to be seen. He has hidden among the baggage.
Saul is brought out, and his physical stature impresses the crowd. Samuel presents him, and many shout, “Long live the king.”
Not everyone is convinced, however, and the chapter ends with both supporters and skeptics. Saul’s kingship has begun, but the story of whether he will faithfully exercise it remains open.
