David and Goliath
David and Goliath
1 Samuel 17 tells how David confronts the Philistine champion Goliath, rejects Saul’s armor, trusts in the LORD, and defeats Goliath with a sling and stone.
David and Goliath
Israel and the Philistines camp on opposite sides of the Valley of Elah. Each day a Philistine champion named Goliath steps forward and proposes single combat. His size, armor, and weapons dominate the description, and Saul’s army responds with fear.
David enters the scene from outside the army. His father sends him with food for his brothers and provisions for their commander. When David hears Goliath’s challenge, he is struck not simply by the military danger but by the insult directed at the armies of the living God.
David’s questions attract attention, and he is brought to Saul. He volunteers to fight. Saul points to David’s youth and Goliath’s experience, but David recalls protecting his father’s sheep from predators and expresses confidence that the God who delivered him before can deliver him again.
Saul’s armor does not fit David’s experience, so David removes it. He goes toward Goliath with his staff, sling, and stones. Goliath mocks the opponent sent against him. David answers by contrasting weapons with the name of the LORD and declares that the battle belongs to God.
David runs toward the battle line, slings a stone, and strikes Goliath in the forehead. The giant falls. David takes Goliath’s sword and kills him, and the Philistine army flees as Israel pursues.
The scene is often reduced to a generic lesson about defeating personal ‘giants,’ but within 1 Samuel it does more. It advances David’s rise, exposes the fear surrounding Saul’s kingship, and presents David as acting from confidence in Israel’s God. The victory becomes one turning point in the long and increasingly complicated relationship between David and Saul.
