Korah’s Rebellion
Korah’s Rebellion
Numbers 16 tells how Korah and other leaders challenge Moses and Aaron, leading to a dramatic confrontation over leadership and priestly authority.
Korah’s Rebellion
Korah, a Levite, joins with Dathan, Abiram, and other prominent men in challenging Moses and Aaron. They argue that the whole congregation is holy and accuse the two leaders of elevating themselves above everyone else.
Moses falls facedown. He proposes a test involving censers and incense so that God will make clear whom he has chosen for priestly service.
The conflict is not limited to Korah. Dathan and Abiram refuse even to meet with Moses and accuse him of bringing Israel out of Egypt only to let the people die in the wilderness.
The next day the competing group gathers with censers at the tent of meeting. The glory of the LORD appears.
Moses warns the congregation to move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. He declares that an extraordinary judgment will demonstrate that he has not acted on his own authority.
The ground splits open beneath the rebels and their households, while fire consumes the men offering incense.
Yet the crisis continues. The following day the congregation blames Moses and Aaron for the deaths. A plague begins among the people.
Aaron takes incense and stands between the living and the dead until the plague is stopped.
The story portrays rebellion against leadership, but it also repeatedly distinguishes roles within Israel’s worship. The question is not whether the entire community belongs to God, but whether every member has been given the same calling and authority.
