BIOGRAPHY

The Story of Korah

Korah is identified as a son of Izhar from the Kohathite branch of Levi. Numbers 16 presents him joining with Dathan, Abiram, On, and 250 community leaders in a challenge to Moses and Aaron. The rebels argue that the whole congregation is holy and question why Moses and Aaron exalt themselves.

Moses responds by proposing a test involving censers and incense. The narrative separates Korah’s priestly challenge from the complaints associated with Dathan and Abiram while bringing the rebellion together under divine judgment. The earth opens beneath Dathan and Abiram’s households, while fire consumes the 250 men offering incense. The account then continues with further judgment and the confirmation of Aaron’s priestly line.

Numbers later notes that Korah’s sons did not die, and the Korahite line remains significant in later Levitical and psalm traditions. Jude 11 uses “Korah’s rebellion” as a warning example.
