Moses Strikes the Rock
Numbers 20 tells how Israel complains for water at Kadesh, Moses strikes the rock, and Moses and Aaron are told they will not lead the assembly into the promised land.
Moses Strikes the Rock
The Israelites gather at Kadesh and find themselves without water. The congregation assembles against Moses and Aaron, repeating the wilderness pattern of complaint.
They ask why they have been brought into the wilderness and describe the place as lacking grain, figs, vines, pomegranates, and water.
Moses and Aaron leave the assembly and go to the entrance of the tent of meeting, where they fall facedown. The glory of the LORD appears.
Moses is instructed to take the staff, gather the assembly with Aaron, and speak to the rock before the people. Water will come from it for the community and their livestock.
Moses gathers the people but speaks sharply, calling them rebels and asking whether “we” must bring water from the rock. He raises his hand and strikes the rock twice with the staff.
Water pours out abundantly, and the people and animals drink. The immediate need is met.
Yet Moses and Aaron are then told that because they did not trust God enough to honor him as holy before Israel, they will not bring the assembly into the land.
The place becomes associated with Meribah, the waters of contention. The story is therefore not simply another miracle of provision. It is also a sobering episode in which even Moses’ long leadership does not place him beyond accountability.
