Joseph Sold by His Brothers
Joseph Sold by His Brothers
Genesis 37 begins Joseph’s descent into Egypt when his brothers, driven by jealousy, sell him to traveling merchants and deceive their father about his fate.
Joseph Sold by His Brothers
Joseph enters Genesis 37 as Jacob’s favored son, a position made visible by the special garment his father gives him. His brothers already resent the favoritism, and Joseph’s dreams intensify the conflict. In the dreams, members of the family bow before him.
When Joseph is sent to check on his brothers, they see him coming and plot to kill him. Reuben persuades them not to shed his blood directly and hopes to rescue him later. They strip Joseph of his garment and throw him into an empty pit.
While Joseph is in the pit, a caravan approaches. Judah proposes selling him rather than killing him. Joseph is taken away toward Egypt, and the brothers dip his garment in goat’s blood so that Jacob will conclude that a wild animal killed his son.
The chapter closes with two devastated separations: Jacob refuses comfort because he believes Joseph is dead, while Joseph is sold in Egypt to Potiphar. Yet the reader knows that Joseph is alive, and the story continues through slavery, false accusation, imprisonment, and eventually elevation in Pharaoh’s government.
Years later, famine brings Joseph’s brothers to Egypt. When Joseph finally reveals his identity in Genesis 45, he interprets the family’s painful history through preservation: human beings intended harm, but God has used the sequence of events to save life. That later reconciliation does not erase the brothers’ wrongdoing; it becomes the surprising resolution of the betrayal that begins in Genesis 37.
