Jacob Wrestles with God
Jacob Wrestles with God
On the night before meeting Esau, Jacob wrestles until daybreak with a mysterious man and receives the name Israel.
Jacob Wrestles with God
Jacob is returning toward the land he left years earlier, and one unresolved fear dominates the journey: Esau. Jacob had deceived his brother and fled from him. Now messengers report that Esau is approaching with four hundred men.
Jacob prepares carefully. He divides his household, sends gifts ahead, and prays for deliverance. During the night he moves his family across the Jabbok, then remains alone.
A mysterious man wrestles with Jacob until daybreak. The struggle is physical and unresolved. When the man sees that Jacob will not yield, he touches Jacob’s hip and injures it. Still Jacob refuses to let go without a blessing.
The encounter turns on identity. Jacob gives his name, and he is told that he will now be called Israel because he has struggled with God and with men and has prevailed. Jacob asks the stranger’s name but does not receive it. Instead he receives a blessing.
Jacob names the place Peniel, saying that he has seen God face to face and survived. He leaves limping as the sun rises. The next chapter brings the feared meeting with Esau, but Genesis 32 has already transformed the night before it: Jacob moves forward wounded, blessed, and carrying a new name.
