Ezra Reads the Law to the People
Ezra Reads the Law to the People
Nehemiah 8 tells how Ezra publicly reads the Law after the return from exile while Levites help the people understand what is being read.
Ezra Reads the Law to the People
The people gather together in the square near the Water Gate and ask Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses.
Ezra reads aloud from early morning until midday before men, women, and all who are able to understand.
He stands on a raised wooden platform where the crowd can see him. When Ezra opens the book, the people stand.
Ezra blesses the LORD, and the people respond with raised hands, “Amen, Amen,” before bowing in worship.
Levites move among the people, helping them understand the Law. The text emphasizes not merely reading words but giving the sense so that the people comprehend what is being read.
The people begin weeping as they hear the Law.
Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites tell them that the day is holy and that they should not mourn. They are instructed to eat, drink, share with those who have nothing prepared, and rejoice.
As the reading continues, the people discover instructions concerning the Festival of Booths. They gather branches, construct temporary shelters, and celebrate the festival.
The Law continues to be read throughout the celebration. The rebuilt wall has restored a boundary around Jerusalem, but this assembly identifies Scripture, understanding, worship, generosity, and shared memory as essential to rebuilding the people themselves.
