Josiah Finds the Book of the Law
Josiah Finds the Book of the Law
2 Kings 22–23 tells how a scroll of the law is discovered during temple repairs, leading King Josiah to repentance and a sweeping religious reform.
Josiah Finds the Book of the Law
During Josiah’s reign, money collected at the temple is used to fund repairs. While the work is underway, the high priest Hilkiah reports an extraordinary discovery: the Book of the Law has been found in the house of the LORD.
The scroll is brought to the royal secretary Shaphan, who reads it and then takes it to the king.
When Josiah hears the words, he tears his clothes. He recognizes a profound gap between the covenant’s demands and the nation’s behavior.
Josiah sends officials to inquire of the LORD. They consult the prophet Huldah, who confirms that judgment is coming because Judah has abandoned God and worshiped other gods.
Yet Huldah also gives Josiah a personal word: because his heart was responsive and he humbled himself when he heard the warning, he will not personally see the coming disaster.
Josiah gathers Judah’s leaders and people at the temple and reads the covenant publicly. He pledges himself to follow it, and the people join the covenant renewal.
A sweeping reform follows. Idolatrous objects are removed, unauthorized worship sites are destroyed, and practices associated with other gods are dismantled.
Josiah also commands the celebration of Passover according to the covenant.
The narrator praises Josiah’s wholehearted turning to the LORD. Yet the larger book remains sobering: the reform is genuine, but Judah’s accumulated history of rebellion still moves the nation toward eventual exile.
