BIOGRAPHY

The Story of Ezra

Ezra is introduced as a priestly descendant of Aaron and a scribe skilled in the Law of Moses. King Artaxerxes authorizes him to travel from Babylon to Jerusalem with other Israelites and support temple worship and administration of the law.

Ezra 7:10 summarizes his orientation: he set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, to do it, and to teach it. He organizes the returning group, proclaims a fast for protection, and reaches Jerusalem.

Ezra then confronts a crisis involving marriages with surrounding peoples. Ezra 9–10 presents his grief, confession, and the community’s difficult response. Nehemiah 8 later presents Ezra publicly reading the Law while Levites help the people understand it.
