Elijah and the Prophets of Baal
Elijah and the Prophets of Baal
On Mount Carmel, Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to a public contest over which deity will answer by fire. The LORD answers Elijah’s prayer, and the people acknowledge the LORD as God.
Elijah and the Prophets of Baal
During the reign of Ahab, Israel is suffering through drought, and the conflict between worship of the LORD and Baal has become public and political. Elijah calls for a confrontation on Mount Carmel.
The people gather with prophets of Baal. Elijah challenges Israel’s divided loyalty and proposes a test involving two sacrifices. The prophets of Baal may call on their god, and Elijah will call on the LORD. The God who answers by fire will be recognized as God.
From morning onward the prophets of Baal call, dance, and eventually cut themselves, but there is no answer. Elijah mocks the silence and then repairs the altar of the LORD using twelve stones representing the tribes of Israel.
He places the sacrifice on the altar and has water poured over it repeatedly until the trench around it is filled. Elijah then prays. Fire falls and consumes the offering, wood, stones, dust, and water.
The people fall down and acknowledge the LORD. The chapter continues with judgment on the prophets of Baal and with the end of the drought as rain finally approaches.
Mount Carmel is therefore not merely a miracle story. It dramatizes a covenant crisis over whom Israel will worship. The next chapter is equally important for understanding Elijah: after this public victory, the prophet flees in fear and exhaustion, and God meets him in the wilderness.
