Solomon Asks for Wisdom
Solomon Asks for Wisdom
Early in Solomon’s reign, God appears to him in a dream and invites him to ask for what he wants. Solomon asks for an understanding heart to govern and discern rightly.
Solomon Asks for Wisdom
Solomon begins his reign in the shadow of David, inheriting both a kingdom and an enormous responsibility. In 1 Kings 3 he goes to Gibeon to sacrifice, and God appears to him in a dream with an extraordinary invitation: ask what should be given to you.
Solomon does not ask first for wealth, long life, or the death of his enemies. He describes himself as inexperienced and asks for an understanding heart so that he can judge the people and distinguish between good and evil.
The request pleases God. Solomon is promised wisdom and discernment, along with riches and honor he did not request. The promise of long life is connected with walking faithfully.
The narrative immediately demonstrates the gift through the famous case of two women who both claim the same living child. With no witnesses to settle the dispute, Solomon proposes dividing the child. The true mother’s willingness to surrender her claim rather than see the child killed reveals her identity.
Israel hears of the judgment and recognizes unusual wisdom in the king. The story establishes wisdom as a defining feature of Solomon’s reign, while later chapters will also show that wisdom does not make him immune to compromise. The beginning is bright, but Kings ultimately evaluates rulers by covenant faithfulness as well as ability.
