Daniel in the Lions’ Den
Daniel in the Lions’ Den
Daniel 6 tells how officials use Daniel’s prayer practice to trap him under an irreversible royal decree, leading to his night in the lions’ den and his deliverance.
Daniel in the Lions’ Den
Daniel 6 places Daniel under a new imperial administration. His reliability distinguishes him so sharply that the king plans to set him over the whole realm. Other officials become jealous and search for grounds to accuse him.
They find no corruption in Daniel’s public work, so they target his religious faithfulness. They persuade the king to establish a temporary law forbidding petitions to anyone except the king. The penalty is the lions’ den.
Daniel learns that the decree has been signed, but his pattern of prayer does not change. He continues praying toward Jerusalem, and his opponents catch him doing exactly what they expected.
The king realizes too late that he has been manipulated. Bound by his own decree, he orders Daniel thrown into the den, though he expresses hope that Daniel’s God will deliver him. A stone seals the opening.
At dawn the king hurries to the den and calls out. Daniel answers that God sent an angel and shut the lions’ mouths. He is lifted out unharmed, and the officials who plotted against him face the punishment they intended for Daniel.
The story presents faithfulness under pressure without suggesting that Daniel manufactured a confrontation. He simply continues his established practice. His deliverance becomes a public testimony within a foreign empire, one of several Daniel narratives about loyalty to God amid political power.
