The Story of Saul
Saul, son of Kish, is introduced as a Benjaminite selected during Israel’s transition to monarchy. Samuel privately anoints him, and Saul is later publicly chosen. His early reign includes victories over Israel’s enemies and signs of divine empowerment.
Saul’s relationship with Samuel deteriorates after key acts of disobedience in 1 Samuel 13 and 15. Samuel announces that Saul’s kingdom will not endure and that God has rejected him as king. David then enters Saul’s court, defeats Goliath, and grows in public reputation. Saul becomes increasingly threatened by David and repeatedly attempts to kill him.
Near the end of his life Saul consults a medium at Endor despite his own prohibition of such practices. He dies with his sons in battle against the Philistines on Mount Gilboa.
