Jesus Enters Jerusalem
Jesus Enters Jerusalem
All four Gospels describe Jesus entering Jerusalem before Passover as crowds welcome him with branches, garments, and royal or messianic language.
Jesus Enters Jerusalem
As Jesus approaches Jerusalem, he sends disciples to obtain a young donkey or colt. The Gospel writers connect the action with prophetic imagery, especially the king coming humbly and riding on a donkey.
Jesus rides toward the city. People spread garments on the road, while others cut branches. John specifically identifies palm branches.
The crowd shouts words from the Psalms and acclaims the one coming in the name of the Lord. The language carries royal and messianic associations.
Matthew describes the city as stirred by Jesus’ arrival. When people ask who he is, the crowds identify him as the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee.
Luke adds a confrontation with Pharisees who tell Jesus to rebuke his disciples. Jesus answers that if they were silent, the stones would cry out.
Yet Luke also places grief beside celebration. As Jesus approaches and sees Jerusalem, he weeps over the city and speaks of coming judgment.
John notes that the disciples do not initially understand the significance of everything happening. They make the connections more fully after Jesus is glorified.
The entry therefore combines celebration, scriptural symbolism, misunderstanding, and impending conflict. The crowd welcomes Jesus publicly, but the week ahead will move rapidly toward confrontation and crucifixion.
