The Crucifixion of Jesus

BIBLE STORY

The Crucifixion of Jesus

All four Gospels narrate Jesus’ arrest, trial, crucifixion, death, and burial. The crucifixion stands at the center of the New Testament’s proclamation about Jesus.

THE STORY

The Crucifixion of Jesus

The crucifixion narratives begin before Jesus reaches the cross. After the final meal with his disciples, he goes to pray and is arrested. He is questioned by Jewish leaders and brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor with authority to impose crucifixion.

The Gospel accounts present multiple pressures around the decision: accusations against Jesus, the crowd, Pilate’s questioning, and the charge connected with kingship. Jesus is mocked, beaten, and dressed in ways that parody royal authority.

He is taken to the place of execution, identified as Golgotha or the Place of a Skull. The Romans crucify him and place a written charge above him identifying him with kingship of the Jews. Soldiers divide his clothing. Followers and opponents watch from nearby.

The Gospels preserve different sayings from the cross and different details around the final hours. Together they depict suffering, mockery, concern for others, Scripture, abandonment, trust, and completion. Darkness accompanies part of the scene, and Jesus dies.

The narratives then slow down to establish burial. Joseph of Arimathea asks for Jesus’ body and places it in a tomb. Women who followed Jesus observe where he is laid. The tomb is not a vague ending point; it becomes essential to what the Gospels claim happens next.

The New Testament letters later interpret the crucifixion through categories such as sacrifice, reconciliation, covenant, redemption, and victory. Those theological interpretations grow from the historical claim at the center of the Gospel narratives: Jesus was executed by crucifixion under Roman authority and truly died.
