The Transfiguration of Jesus
The Transfiguration of Jesus
The Synoptic Gospels tell how Jesus is transfigured on a mountain before Peter, James, and John, where Moses and Elijah appear and a voice speaks from the cloud.
The Transfiguration of Jesus
Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain away from the others. There his appearance changes before them. His face and clothing become radiant in descriptions that emphasize extraordinary brightness.
Moses and Elijah appear and speak with Jesus. Luke adds that they are speaking about Jesus’ “departure,” which he is about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
Peter responds by proposing three shelters: one for Jesus, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. While he is still speaking, a bright cloud overshadows them.
A voice from the cloud identifies Jesus as the beloved Son and commands the disciples to listen to him. In Matthew, the disciples fall facedown in fear. Jesus approaches and tells them not to be afraid.
When they look again, Moses and Elijah are gone and Jesus alone remains with them. As they descend the mountain, Jesus instructs them not to tell others about the vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.
The disciples then ask about Elijah, leading to further discussion about expectation, John the Baptist, and the suffering ahead.
The Transfiguration therefore stands between confession and suffering. The disciples see glory, but the experience does not bypass the road toward Jerusalem. The heavenly voice directs attention not toward remaining on the mountain but toward listening to Jesus.
