The Road to Emmaus
The Road to Emmaus
Luke 24 tells how two disciples encounter the risen Jesus while walking to Emmaus but do not recognize him until he breaks bread with them.
The Road to Emmaus
Two disciples leave Jerusalem and walk toward a village called Emmaus. As they travel, they discuss the events surrounding Jesus’ death and the reports from the empty tomb.
Jesus himself approaches and walks with them, but they are prevented from recognizing him.
He asks what they are discussing. Cleopas is astonished that this apparent stranger seems unaware of the events in Jerusalem.
They describe Jesus of Nazareth as a prophet powerful in word and deed and explain that they had hoped he was the one who would redeem Israel.
They also recount the confusing news from the women who found the tomb empty and reported an angelic message that Jesus was alive.
Jesus responds by explaining from Moses and the Prophets why the Messiah’s suffering and glory fit within the Scriptures.
As they reach Emmaus, the disciples urge him to stay because evening is approaching.
At the table Jesus takes bread, blesses it, breaks it, and gives it to them. Their eyes are opened, and they recognize him. At that moment he disappears from their sight.
The two reflect that their hearts were burning while he spoke with them on the road and opened the Scriptures.
They immediately return to Jerusalem and find the gathered disciples. Their journey away from the city in confusion becomes a nighttime return carrying resurrection testimony.
