The Ascension of Jesus
The Ascension of Jesus
Luke and Acts describe the risen Jesus blessing and commissioning his disciples before being taken from their sight, with Acts locating the event near the Mount of Olives.
The Ascension of Jesus
The risen Jesus continues teaching his disciples and speaks about the kingdom of God. He tells them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for the promised Holy Spirit.
The disciples ask whether this is the time when the kingdom will be restored to Israel. Jesus redirects them from calculating times and seasons toward the task they are about to receive.
They will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon them, and they will be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
After saying this, Jesus is lifted up before them. A cloud takes him from their sight.
The disciples remain looking upward. Two men in white clothing stand beside them and ask why they are staring into heaven. They say that Jesus, who has been taken from them, will come in the same manner.
Luke’s Gospel describes Jesus blessing the disciples as he departs. Their response is not despair. They worship and return to Jerusalem with great joy.
Acts says they return from the Mount of Olives and gather together in the city. The story then moves immediately toward prayer, the replacement of Judas among the Twelve, and Pentecost.
The Ascension is therefore not presented as the conclusion of Christian mission. It is the transition that establishes the disciples as witnesses and prepares for the Spirit-empowered expansion that structures the rest of Acts.
