The Queen of Sheba hears reports about Solomon’s fame and his relationship to the name of the LORD. She travels to Jerusalem with a large caravan carrying spices, gold, and precious stones.

Her purpose is not merely ceremonial. She comes to test Solomon with difficult questions and speaks with him about everything on her mind.

Solomon answers her questions. The account says nothing is too difficult for him to explain.

The queen then observes far more than verbal wisdom. She sees Solomon’s palace, the food at his table, the organization of his officials and servants, their clothing, his cupbearers, and the offerings associated with worship.

The combined effect leaves her overwhelmed. She tells Solomon that the reports she heard in her own land were true, but that she had not believed them until she saw the kingdom herself.

She declares that even half of Solomon’s wisdom and prosperity had not been reported to her. She praises the happiness of those who continually hear his wisdom.

The queen also blesses the LORD for delighting in Solomon and placing him on Israel’s throne to administer justice and righteousness.

She gives Solomon extraordinary gifts, and Solomon in turn gives her what she desires before she returns home.

The episode captures Solomon’s reign near its celebrated peak. The chapters that follow will increasingly expose the dangers accompanying the same wealth, international relationships, and royal power.
