The First Passover
The First Passover
Exodus 12 tells how Israel prepares a lamb and marks its doorposts before the final plague, establishing the Passover observance on the night of the Exodus.
The First Passover
God gives Moses and Aaron detailed instructions for a new observance that will mark the beginning of Israel’s departure from Egypt.
Each household is to select a lamb, slaughter it, and place some of its blood on the sides and top of the doorway.
The meal is eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. The people are to eat dressed for travel, with sandals on and staff in hand.
During the night judgment passes through Egypt. The marked houses of Israel are passed over.
Across Egypt the firstborn die, from Pharaoh’s household to the households of prisoners and livestock. A great cry rises through the land.
Pharaoh summons Moses and Aaron during the night and orders Israel to leave, taking their flocks and herds.
The Egyptians urge the people to depart quickly. Israel carries dough before it has time to rise, which becomes connected with the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
The Passover instructions are not limited to that generation. Parents are told that when children ask what the ceremony means, they are to explain how God passed over Israelite homes while striking Egypt.
The meal therefore becomes both part of the deliverance itself and a recurring means of preserving its memory.
