The Parable of the Sower
The Parable of the Sower
Jesus tells of seed falling on four kinds of ground and later explains the soils as different responses to the word.
The Parable of the Sower
Jesus describes a farmer going out to sow seed. The seed is the same, but it lands in very different conditions.
Some falls along the path, where birds quickly eat it. Some falls on rocky ground with little soil. It springs up rapidly but has no depth, so the sun scorches it.
Other seed falls among thorns. The plants begin to grow, but the thorns grow with them and choke them.
Finally, some seed falls on good soil and produces a crop many times greater than what was planted.
Jesus calls those with ears to hear. Later, away from the larger crowd, he explains the parable to his disciples.
The seed represents the word. The path portrays those from whom the message is quickly taken. Rocky soil portrays an enthusiastic but rootless response that collapses under trouble or persecution.
The thorny ground portrays hearers in whom worries, wealth, desires, or pleasures crowd out the word and prevent mature fruit.
The good soil portrays those who hear, receive, understand, or hold fast to the word and bear fruit with perseverance.
The story’s question is therefore not whether the seed is powerful enough. The variable is reception. Jesus turns an ordinary agricultural scene into an examination of hearing, endurance, distraction, and fruitfulness.
