Naboth’s Vineyard
Naboth’s Vineyard
1 Kings 21 tells how King Ahab covets Naboth’s vineyard and how Queen Jezebel engineers Naboth’s death so the king can take the property.
Naboth’s Vineyard
Ahab wants a vineyard beside his palace in Jezreel so that he can turn it into a vegetable garden. He offers Naboth money or a better vineyard in exchange.
Naboth refuses because the land is his ancestral inheritance.
Ahab returns home resentful, lies on his bed, and refuses to eat. Jezebel asks why he is upset and then promises to obtain the vineyard for him.
Using Ahab’s name and seal, Jezebel writes to local leaders. She orders a public fast, places Naboth prominently before the people, and arranges for false witnesses to accuse him of cursing God and the king.
Naboth is taken outside the city and stoned to death.
When Jezebel hears that he is dead, she tells Ahab to take possession of the vineyard. Ahab goes down to claim it.
God sends Elijah to meet him there. Elijah announces judgment against Ahab’s house and against Jezebel.
Ahab responds by tearing his clothes, fasting, and humbling himself. The announced disaster against his dynasty is therefore delayed during his lifetime.
The vineyard remains a symbol of what happens when royal desire treats law, inheritance, courts, and human life as tools of power.
