Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
The Gospels tell how Jesus prays in deep anguish in Gethsemane on the night of his arrest while his closest disciples struggle to remain awake.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
Jesus goes with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane. He tells most of them to sit while he goes farther to pray, taking Peter, James, and John with him.
Jesus becomes deeply distressed and tells the three that his soul is overwhelmed with sorrow. He asks them to remain and keep watch.
Moving a short distance away, Jesus falls to the ground and prays. He asks that, if possible, the cup before him might pass from him.
Yet the prayer does not end with escape. Jesus submits his desire to the Father’s will.
He returns to the disciples and finds them sleeping. He specifically addresses Peter and asks whether they could not keep watch even for one hour.
Jesus tells them to watch and pray so that they do not enter temptation, recognizing the tension between willing spirit and weak flesh.
He withdraws and prays again. Matthew describes the pattern repeating three times, while Luke emphasizes the intensity of Jesus’ anguish.
When Jesus returns for the final time, the moment for watching has passed. The betrayer is approaching.
Gethsemane does not depict Jesus as emotionally untouched by death. The scene’s force comes precisely from the combination of profound anguish, persistent prayer, and deliberate obedience as the arrest begins.
