Elijah Fed by Ravens
Elijah Fed by Ravens
1 Kings 17 tells how Elijah is sustained during drought, first by ravens at the brook Cherith and then through a widow at Zarephath.
Elijah Fed by Ravens
Elijah suddenly appears before King Ahab and announces that there will be neither dew nor rain except according to his word. He is then instructed to leave and hide by the brook Cherith east of the Jordan.
At the brook Elijah drinks from the water, while ravens bring him bread and meat morning and evening. As the drought continues, the brook eventually dries up.
Elijah is then sent outside Israel to Zarephath, where a widow will provide for him. He finds her gathering sticks and asks for water and bread. She explains that she has only a handful of flour and a little oil and is preparing what she expects to be the last meal for herself and her son.
Elijah tells her not to fear and asks her to make a small cake for him first, promising that the flour and oil will not run out until rain returns. She does as he says, and the household continues to eat during the famine.
A second crisis follows when the widow’s son becomes ill and dies. The widow confronts Elijah in grief. Elijah carries the child upstairs, cries out to God, and stretches himself over the child. The boy’s life returns.
Elijah brings the child back to his mother. She responds that she now knows Elijah is a man of God and that the word of the LORD in his mouth is truth.
The chapter moves from a hidden brook to a foreign widow’s home, but the theme remains provision amid conditions of scarcity and death. It prepares for the larger confrontation over worship that follows in Elijah’s ministry.
