The Boy Jesus in the Temple
Luke 2 tells how twelve-year-old Jesus remains in Jerusalem after Passover and is found in the temple listening to teachers and asking questions.
The Boy Jesus in the Temple
Mary, Joseph, and Jesus travel from Galilee to Jerusalem for Passover as they do each year.
When the festival ends, the traveling group begins the journey home. Mary and Joseph assume Jesus is among relatives and acquaintances.
After a day they realize he is missing. They return to Jerusalem and search for him.
After three days they find Jesus in the temple courts sitting among teachers, listening and asking questions.
Those who hear him are amazed at his understanding and answers.
Mary asks why he has treated them this way and describes the anxiety with which she and Joseph have searched.
Jesus answers by asking why they were searching and whether they did not know he must be in his Father’s house, or about his Father’s business depending on translation.
Mary and Joseph do not fully understand the statement.
Jesus returns with them to Nazareth and is obedient to them. Luke closes by saying that he grows in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and people.
