Pentecost and the Coming of the Holy Spirit
Pentecost and the Coming of the Holy Spirit
Acts 2 tells how the Holy Spirit fills Jesus’ followers at Pentecost, they speak in other languages, Peter explains the event from Scripture, and thousands respond to the message.
Pentecost and the Coming of the Holy Spirit
Acts begins with the risen Jesus instructing his followers to wait in Jerusalem for the promised Holy Spirit. After his ascension, the disciples remain together in prayer. When the day of Pentecost arrives, that period of waiting ends dramatically.
A sound like a violent rushing wind fills the house. Something described as divided tongues like fire appears and rests on them. They are filled with the Holy Spirit and begin speaking in other languages as the Spirit enables them.
Jerusalem contains Jewish worshipers from many regions. The crowd is bewildered because people hear the message in their own languages. Acts lists regions across the ancient world, turning the miracle into a sign of communication across geographic and linguistic boundaries.
Some observers are amazed and ask what the event means. Others mock the disciples. Peter stands with the Eleven and interprets what is happening through the prophet Joel, then turns to Jesus: his ministry, crucifixion, resurrection, exaltation, and the outpouring of the Spirit.
The listeners are cut to the heart and ask what they should do. Peter calls them to repentance and baptism. Acts reports that about three thousand people are added that day.
The chapter ends not with the spectacle but with a community. The believers devote themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayers. Pentecost therefore links the Holy Spirit, public witness, the proclamation of Jesus, and the formation of the early church.
