Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
All four Gospels tell how Jesus feeds a large crowd with a small supply of loaves and fish, with twelve baskets of fragments remaining.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
A large crowd follows Jesus into a remote area. The Gospels connect their interest with his healing ministry, and Mark emphasizes Jesus’ compassion because the people are like sheep without a shepherd.
As the day grows late, the disciples recognize a practical problem: thousands of people need food. Their instinct is to send the crowd away to find provisions. Jesus instead tells the disciples to give them something to eat.
The available food is painfully small compared with the need. John’s account mentions a boy with five barley loaves and two fish. Jesus has the people sit down, gives thanks, and distributes the food.
Everyone eats. The disciples then gather what remains, filling twelve baskets with leftovers. The abundance after the meal is as striking as the insufficiency before it.
The feeding is one of the few miracles narrated in all four Gospels. John follows it with an extended discussion in which Jesus speaks of bread from heaven and identifies himself as the bread of life. The event therefore functions both as compassionate provision and as a sign that pushes the crowd toward deeper questions about who Jesus is.
