Abraham and Isaac
Abraham and Isaac
Genesis 22 tells how God tests Abraham by commanding him to offer Isaac, how Abraham proceeds in obedience, and how God provides a ram instead.
Abraham and Isaac
Genesis 22 opens by telling the reader something Abraham does not initially know: God is testing him. Abraham is commanded to take Isaac, the son bound up with the covenant promise, and go to the land of Moriah to offer him.
Abraham rises early, prepares for the journey, and travels with Isaac and two servants. Near the destination he leaves the servants behind. Isaac carries the wood and asks the painful question at the center of the scene: they have fire and wood, but where is the animal for the offering?
Abraham answers that God will provide. He builds the altar, arranges the wood, binds Isaac, and reaches for the knife. At that moment an angel of the LORD calls to him and stops the act. The test has reached its decisive point.
Abraham sees a ram caught nearby and offers it instead of his son. He names the place in connection with the LORD’s provision. The divine promise concerning descendants and blessing is then reaffirmed.
The chapter is intentionally difficult, and later Jewish and Christian readers have returned to it repeatedly. Within Genesis, the story tests Abraham’s trust at the point where obedience appears to threaten the promise itself. The ending insists that Isaac lives, a substitute is provided, and the covenant story continues.
