BIOGRAPHY

The Story of Jonathan

Jonathan first appears as a military commander under Saul and wins an early victory against a Philistine garrison. In 1 Samuel 14 he and his armor-bearer launch a daring attack that contributes to Israel’s victory.

After David defeats Goliath, Jonathan forms a covenant bond with him. As Saul’s hostility toward David grows, Jonathan advocates for David, warns him of danger, and eventually acknowledges that David will become king. Jonathan nevertheless remains with his father and dies alongside Saul and his brothers at Mount Gilboa.

David responds with a famous lament for Saul and Jonathan and later shows covenant loyalty to Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth.
