The Story of Joseph
Joseph is introduced as a descendant of David and the man betrothed to Mary. When he learns of Mary’s pregnancy, Matthew describes him as righteous and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace. An angel tells him in a dream to take Mary as his wife because the child is conceived by the Holy Spirit.
Joseph names Jesus, establishing his legal place within Joseph’s Davidic household. Matthew then depicts Joseph receiving further dreams directing the family to flee Herod’s threat in Egypt and later to return to Israel and settle in Nazareth.
Luke places Joseph with Mary at Jesus’ birth, presentation in the temple, and the Passover visit to Jerusalem when Jesus is twelve. Joseph then disappears from the narrative, and the New Testament does not describe his death.
