The Story of James

James and his brother John are sons of Zebedee and fishermen when Jesus calls them. Mark records that Jesus gives the brothers the name Boanerges, “sons of thunder.”

James belongs to the smaller group of Peter, James, and John who accompany Jesus at several significant moments, including the raising of Jairus’s daughter, the transfiguration, and Gethsemane.

James and John also display ambition and misunderstanding, including their request for positions of honor. Acts 12 reports that Herod Agrippa I kills James with the sword during persecution of the church.
