The Story of James, Brother of Jesus

The Gospels name James among Jesus’ brothers. John indicates that Jesus’ brothers did not believe in him during part of his public ministry, while Acts later places Jesus’ brothers with the believers after the ascension.

Paul reports that the risen Jesus appeared to James. Galatians identifies James as ‘the Lord’s brother’ and portrays him as an important Jerusalem leader. In Acts 15, James gives a decisive speech during the council concerning Gentile believers, and Acts 21 again presents him as a central Jerusalem figure.

The letter of James identifies its author simply as ‘James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.’ Christian tradition commonly associates the letter with Jesus’ brother, but the letter itself does not explicitly say ‘brother of Jesus.’
