Okay so if you aren’t aware, we are reading Made for This: 40 Days to Living Your Purpose and we are inviting our followers on Instagram and Facebook to join in reading it with us. What is also awesome is that Jennie Allen (the author!) is reading it and discussing it starting today, too! We are pretty excited to get started on this journey over the next 40 days and we can’t wait to share our insights, hear from you, and follow along with Jennie as she reads and shares with her followers and community, too! If you still need the book, you can grab it here and get caught up!
“We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10
When I read that verse on the first page, I knew that I was going to love this. I have been thinking about this concept for a long time–that idea that God has set us down across the infinite stretches of time and space into this one particular time as this one particular person in this one particular place. If you really ponder that, it’s pretty remarkable. Why would God do that at random? You were chosen for this time and place because your purpose lies within its walls. The more I reflect on this idea, the more aware I become that I am here for a reason, that God knows all of my steps and every direction my path will go. Like Jennie goes on to explain, Paul wrote in Ephesians that God wrote the details of our good works before time began. He knew what He wanted for us…but do we know?
Throughout the next 40 days (39 now!) as we read this book, we are going to challenge ourselves to surrender to God, to be all in, and to start living out what He has in store for us. In order to do this, we have to be willing to tell God, to pray and say it out loud, that we are jumping in with two feet. Like Jennie says, we do this by “praying anything.” Anything God asks of us, we are going to surrender.
Popular culture and society tell us to be selfish with our lives, our time, and our energy.
“Learn to say NO to everything that doesn’t serve you.”
“Only do what makes you happy!”
“Cut everyone out of your life who doesn’t bring you peace!”
But what does God ask us to do with our lives, our time, and our energy?
God asks us to surrender all of those things to Him, and more. (No this doesn’t mean you have to stay around people who are truly not good for you and no this doesn’t mean you can’t seek happiness). Sometimes following the path that God has chosen for us means…
Say no to everything that is for man and yourself and yes to everything that is for God.
Do what you feel God has called you to do, even if it is hard.
Be the peace that people so desperately need.
We can’t do what God has called us to do if we are too busy making our own agenda and listening to what social media, society, and our culture today has planned for us.
How do we figure out what God has called us to do? Well, the only answer I have so far is prayer, but I can’t wait to read on and dive into this alongside you.
So as we finish up Day 1 our prayer is that God will guide us over the next 39 days to surrender our whole lives to him as we “pray anything.” That He will allow us to go against the current of our own motives and what society and the world expect us, and lean into Him with complete trust. We pray that no matter how unprepared or confused or lost we feel, we will feel God beside us every step of the way.
