Jesus and the Woman at the Well
Jesus and the Woman at the Well
John 4 tells how Jesus speaks with a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well about living water, worship, and his identity, leading many in her town to encounter him.
Jesus and the Woman at the Well
Traveling through Samaria, Jesus stops at Jacob’s well near Sychar while his disciples go into town for food. A Samaritan woman comes to draw water, and Jesus asks her for a drink.
The request surprises her because he is a Jewish man speaking directly to a Samaritan woman. Jesus shifts the conversation from ordinary water to the “living water” he can give.
The woman initially understands the language literally. The well is deep and Jesus has no bucket. Jesus explains that ordinary water leaves a person thirsty again, while the water he gives becomes a spring leading to eternal life.
The conversation then turns personal when Jesus tells her to call her husband. His knowledge of her history prompts her to identify him as a prophet. She raises the disputed question of the proper place of worship: the Samaritan mountain or Jerusalem.
Jesus says an hour is coming when worship will not be defined by either location in the old way. True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. When the woman mentions the coming Messiah, Jesus identifies himself to her.
The disciples return, and the woman leaves her water jar and goes back to the town. She tells the people about the man who knew her history and asks whether he could be the Christ.
Many Samaritans come to Jesus. Some believe because of the woman’s testimony; others hear Jesus for themselves and ask him to remain with them. The story ends with their confession that they now believe not merely because of her report but because they have heard for themselves.
