The Tower of Babel
The Tower of Babel
Genesis 11 describes humanity gathering to build a city and tower, God confusing their language, and the people being scattered across the earth.
The Tower of Babel
After the flood narratives, Genesis pictures people sharing one language and migrating together. They settle in the land of Shinar and begin an ambitious building project. Using brick and bitumen, they plan a city with a tower reaching toward the heavens.
The builders explain their purpose: they want to make a name for themselves and prevent being scattered across the earth. That goal creates an important tension with the earlier command for humanity to fill the earth.
God comes down to see the city and tower. The story’s irony is deliberate: a structure imagined by its builders as reaching the heavens is still something God must ‘come down’ to inspect. God then confuses their language so that cooperation breaks down.
The project stops, and the people are scattered. The place receives the name Babel, associated in the narrative with the confusion of language.
Babel closes the primeval history immediately before Genesis turns to Abram. Humanity’s attempt to secure unity, reputation, and permanence by its own project ends in scattering. The next chapter begins with God promising to make Abram’s name great and to bring blessing to the families of the earth, creating a striking narrative contrast.
