The Ten Plagues of Egypt
The Ten Plagues of Egypt
Exodus 7–12 tells how a series of plagues strikes Egypt as Pharaoh repeatedly refuses to release the Israelites, culminating in the death of the firstborn and the first Passover.
The Ten Plagues of Egypt
Moses and Aaron repeatedly stand before Pharaoh with a demand: let Israel go so that the people may serve their God. Pharaoh refuses, and Egypt enters a prolonged sequence of signs and judgments.
The Nile turns to blood. Frogs spread across the land. Gnats or lice follow, then swarms of flies. Livestock die, painful boils break out, and a devastating hailstorm destroys crops and animals left exposed.
Locusts consume what the hail has left. Then darkness covers Egypt for three days. At several points Pharaoh appears ready to compromise or relent, especially when a plague becomes unbearable, but the release does not hold.
The narrative repeatedly distinguishes Israel from the surrounding devastation and increasingly portrays Pharaoh’s officials as recognizing the danger of continued resistance.
The final warning is different. Death will strike the firstborn throughout Egypt. Israelite households are instructed to slaughter a lamb, place its blood on the doorway, and eat a prepared meal ready for departure. This becomes the Passover observance.
At midnight the final plague comes. A great cry rises in Egypt. Pharaoh summons Moses and Aaron during the night and tells the Israelites to leave with their families and flocks.
The people depart in haste. The plague cycle has moved from the Nile, one of Egypt’s defining sources of life, through the land, crops, animals, bodies, light, and finally households themselves.
Exodus will soon show Pharaoh changing course again and pursuing Israel to the sea. But the plagues have already established the central claim of the story: the enslaved people do not leave because Pharaoh gradually becomes generous. They leave through a confrontation in which Egypt’s king is shown unable to keep permanent possession of them.
