Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man
Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man
Mark 2, Matthew 9, and Luke 5 tell how friends lower a paralyzed man through a roof to reach Jesus, who first announces forgiveness and then tells the man to rise and walk.
Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man
Jesus returns to Capernaum, and word spreads that he is in a house. So many people gather that there is no room left, even near the door, while Jesus teaches them.
Four men arrive carrying a paralyzed man. Unable to get through the crowd, they go up to the roof, open a space above Jesus, and lower the man on his mat into the room.
Jesus sees their faith and says something unexpected. Before addressing the paralysis, he tells the man that his sins are forgiven.
Some teachers of the law silently object. In their reasoning, forgiveness of sins belongs to God, so Jesus’ words raise a much larger question than the healing everyone expected.
Jesus addresses their thoughts and asks which is easier: to tell the man that his sins are forgiven or to tell him to rise, take his mat, and walk.
He then explains that the visible healing will demonstrate the authority of the Son of Man on earth to forgive sins. Jesus tells the paralyzed man to get up, take his mat, and go home.
The man rises immediately, picks up the mat on which he had been carried, and walks out in front of everyone.
The crowd responds with amazement and praise. The friends came seeking physical restoration, but the story uses the healing to force a deeper question about Jesus’ authority and the meaning of forgiveness.
