Jesus Calms the Storm
Jesus Calms the Storm
The Synoptic Gospels tell how a violent storm threatens Jesus and his disciples on the Sea of Galilee until Jesus rebukes the wind and sea.
Jesus Calms the Storm
After a day of teaching beside the sea, Jesus tells his disciples to cross to the other side. They leave the crowd and take him in the boat. Other boats travel with them.
A severe windstorm rises. Waves break over the boat, and it begins to fill with water. Several of the disciples are experienced fishermen, yet the situation becomes frightening enough that they believe they may die.
Jesus is asleep in the stern on a cushion. The disciples wake him. In Mark their question carries both fear and accusation: do you not care that we are perishing?
Jesus gets up, rebukes the wind, and speaks to the sea. The wind stops and a great calm follows. The sudden quiet is as striking as the storm that preceded it.
Jesus then turns to the disciples and asks why they are afraid and whether they still lack faith. The rescue does not end their fear so much as redirect it. They become deeply awed and ask one another who Jesus is, since even the wind and sea obey him.
Matthew, Mark, and Luke each preserve the basic movement of the story: danger, the sleeping Jesus, the disciples’ appeal, the command to the storm, and amazement at Jesus’ authority. The scene is therefore not simply a lesson about remaining calm in difficulty. Its narrative climax is the disciples’ question about the identity of the person in the boat with them.
