The Jerusalem Council
The Jerusalem Council
Acts 15 tells how apostles and elders meet in Jerusalem to decide whether Gentile believers must be circumcised and keep the law of Moses in order to belong to the church.
The Jerusalem Council
Teachers arrive in Antioch insisting that Gentile believers must be circumcised according to the custom of Moses in order to be saved.
Paul and Barnabas strongly dispute the teaching, and the church sends them to Jerusalem to consult the apostles and elders.
The issue is debated. Some believers from the Pharisees argue that Gentiles should be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.
Peter reminds the assembly that God chose him to bring the gospel to Gentiles and gave them the Holy Spirit without distinction.
He warns against placing a yoke on Gentile disciples and emphasizes salvation through the grace of the Lord Jesus.
Paul and Barnabas then describe signs and wonders God has done among Gentiles through their ministry.
James responds by connecting the testimony with the prophets. He proposes that Gentile believers should not be burdened with circumcision, while asking them to abstain from several practices especially disruptive to fellowship and holiness.
The apostles, elders, and whole church send representatives and a letter to Antioch clarifying the decision.
When the letter is read, the believers rejoice at its encouragement. A conflict that could have divided the growing movement becomes a defining statement about grace and the inclusion of Gentiles.
